If only they'd purchased the Trip Protector...

American Airlines has fixed a software glitch that forced workers at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK/JFK) to sort checked bags by hand. Nevertheless, further flight delays are likely on 31 July 2008 as the airline addresses its backlog of checked bags. The malfunction led to the delay of 48 flights and cancellation of five others on July 30th. The delays will likely cascade throughout the airline's destinations in the United States, as 75 percent of all delays and cancellations nationwide originate in New York. The delays have also affected several international flights. The airline gave passengers the option of rescheduling flights or boarding aircraft without their bags (which would be delivered to them later). The airline has temporarily waived fees for travelers checking fewer than three bags at the airport.
